Do you know the Law? Tangipahoa Parish Amimal Control enforces local animal control ordinances and other Laws pertaining to animals. By enforcing these laws, the department protects both animals and people. We are under the authority of the Parish Council and have jurisdiction throughout the Parish. Animal Control issues citations for violations of Parish or municipal ordinances. Failure to comply with the law may cause your pet to be impounded. You may also be required to pay fines, appear in court or both

- Dogs and Cats over 3 months of age must be vaccinated every year against RABIES by a Licensed Veterinarian.
- Confine your animal to your property or have it under restraint.
Working stock, hunting or show animals are exempt while they are being worked, hunted or shown.
- Female animals “in heat” must be securely confined to prevent unplanned breeding.
- Do not let your animal become a nuisance by letting it chase cars, make excessive noise, turn over garbage cans or destroy someone else’s property.
- An animal that Threatens Public Safety is also a nuisance.
It may be classified as Dangerous or Vicious. There are strict requirements for confinement and ownership of a vicious or dangerous animals
- You must provide your animal with proper Food, Water, Shelter and Veterinary care.
It is against the law to abandon or abuse an animal. Animal Cruelty is a Crime. Some Types of Animal Cruelty carry Felony Penalties. If you know of or suspect Animal Cruelty, call Animal Control.
- When your pet is impounded by Animal Control for any reason, and is wearing identification such as a tag on its collar, we must attempt to contact you and tell you how to reclaim your animal
you can only reclaim your pet upon payment of a board fee for each day it was impounded plus an impoundment fine.
- If your pet Bites another person, you or the person bitten must report the Bite to the Animal Control, Sheriff’s Department and City Police
The pet will be confined and observed for Rabies for 10 days at the Animal Control Shelter
- There is a Fine and possible Imprisonment for interference, molesting or harming an Animal Control Officer in the Performance of His or Her duties
